Abstract
Up to date various somatic treatments have been tried for the purpose of halting the chronic schizoph-, renia¢¥s pathological process.
These authors observed the effect of combined prolonged sleep treatment and Electro-convulsive treatment.
For producing prolonged sleep combination of large amount of chlorpromazine and barbiturate was used.
Subjects consisted of 94 acute cases and 98 chronic ones. 54 of the all acute cases went under regular ECT alone and the rest of 40 under combination of regular ECT and prolonged sleep treatment.
The combined treatment produced 25% of full recovery, 25% of marked improvement, 30% of mode--rate improvement, 15% of slight improvement, and 5% of no improvement, instead of regular ECT alone resulting in M lo of full recovery, 26% of marked improvement, 23% of moderate improvement. 16% of slight improvement and 20% of no improvement.
46 of all 98 chronic schizophrentas weat.under combination of regular ECT and prolonged sleep treatment, and the rest of 52 under that of intensive ECT and prolonged sleep treatment.
The result of the latter consisting of 12% of full recovery, 19% of marked improvement, 35% of moderate improvement, 15% of slight improvement and 19% of no improvement markedly exceeds that of the former consisting of 4% of full recovery, 9% of marked Lm- rovement, 17% of moderate improvement,; 26% of slight improvement and 44% of no improvement.
Our experience taq bt us that combination of prolonged sleep treatment using large amount of chlorpromazine and barbiturate and intensive ECT(mild regressive EeT, 1 ECT daily until the patient gets mild regression, mostly 10 to 20 ECT) does produce no more side reaction than regular ECT or large amount of chlorpromazine alone.
These authors have come to have some mind that combination of prolonged sleep treatment and intensive Electro-Convulsive treatment, especially repeated intensive ECT with various length of intervals which we call "Wavy Intensive ECT" is a recommendable choice for the chronic schizophrenia.
